A novel study for Blueback by Tim Winton. Student workbook + teacher booklet, built on The Writing Revolution. Sustainability + science crossover. For Year 5 and Year 6 classrooms.

Why Blueback

Blueback is the book that makes kids think differently about the ocean.

Winton writes Longboat Bay so clearly your students will picture it — and then he asks them to care about what happens to it. That's what makes this novel a brilliant Year 5 or Year 6 choice: sustainability, sense of place, and what it means to fight quietly for somewhere you love.

You want an Australian novel study done properly. Blueback is one of the best Australian books to teach at upper primary. This unit builds the comprehension, writing, and analytical skill around it, so your students do more than just read a great book — they engage with it.

What's included

Each chapter follows the same activity sequence:

  • Key vocabulary
  • Summary sentence (who / what / when / where / why / how → one full sentence)
  • Because, but, so (reasoning, contrast, cause and effect)
  • Sentences and notes (both directions)
  • Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) using The Writing Revolution
  • Full paragraph with revision and editing
  • Differentiation tips for every activity — below, at, above level

Plus:

  • 10-week unit plan (with built-in catch-up week)
  • Combined teacher booklet + student booklet — print or project
  • Teacher booklet includes lesson plans, curriculum connections, and modelled responses
  • Aligned to Australian Curriculum and US Common Core ELA
  • Print-and-go — no extra prep

Why this works

The same activities every week, on purpose. Consistent activities mean students spend their thinking on the book — not on working out what each new worksheet is asking. Built on The Writing Revolution: structured sentence and paragraph writing that proves a point about a novel.

This is for you if

  • You teach Blueback as a class novel in Year 5 or Year 6
  • You want Australian literature that lands well with this age group
  • You're weaving environmental themes through your literacy block

Made by a teacher librarian, not AI

I read every word of every book personally. I write every question and every model response myself. In a market flooded with AI units that don't align to the actual text — this one does.

Great resource to use in the classroom!

Wow, this resource is so great and super easy to use for both teachers and students with a really clear scaffolded booklet! The activities use great strategies to build reading and writing skills and cover heaps of important concepts like vocabulary, grammar and summarising.

Exceptional planning and explanations

This is a great resource. Opportunities for different review anctivities and content along with different models of reading/writing tools that different schools implement (For example, “writer’s toolbox” so there’s possibilities to add in specific names of sentence types and paragraph types for those parts to link the reading content back to writing strategies they’re learning).
The level this is pitched at would probably match most of the year 7s we have coming through at the moment (although I’ve been teacher upper grades the last couple of years - back to 7-9 this year!). The teacher booklet is set out simply and is well explained with plenty of examples to use with students who are struggling to fully understand the concepts. Definitely worth the purchase!
